Course Description:
This course is designed specifically for beginners to build their sewing skills and increase their confidence, not to mention, have fun getting to know fellow sewists.
The project you’ll be making over the next 6 weeks is an upcycled patchwork tote bag. There’s so much more to this project and course than just making a bag. You’ll learn to choose fabric from upcycled sources, to understand the pattern pieces and even how to adjust them to customize your end product. You’ll also get to experiment with piecing fabrics to create a unique and sustainably made tote bag all while gaining foundational sewing skills including straight stitch, corners, linings, zippers and more.
*Students also need a sewing machine, iron, and ironing board
Understanding pattern pieces & their markings and making simple adjustments for size.
Choose upcycled fabrics for patchwork by analyzing weight, texture, etc. for best results
Learn how to prepare your fabric and cut it accurately to ensure the success of your project.
Learn to thread and maintain your sewing machine.
Become an expert at using your machine to sew straight and zig-zag stitches.
Use the straight stitch to create a trendy surface pattern for your tote bag.
Discover common construction practices for tote bags and use these to make your own.
Learn to sew in a zipper and pocket and navigate sewing corners.
